» Use Dreamweaver CS3 templates to save time May 1, 2008 Hi, When I was working on the redesign of the killersites.com, I found (as a starting point) that the templates that ship with Dreamweaver CS3 useful. Dreamweaver CS3 starter templates Dreamweaver has a nice collection of bare-bones web templates. One thing I found cool about these templates, is that they contain a lot of notes that describe why they (the web-nerds at Adobe) have certain things in place – like the specific code they used to deal with a given CSS layout issue. This is another good way to learn more about CSS. An added bonus: tested layouts The templates are solid, in that you can be sure that they have been tested to work in the major browsers. This beats having to tinker with this yourself! That way, you can concentrate on the design. The killersites.com facelift For my redesign of killersites.com, I used one of the Dreamweaver templates as a starting point. I found that it was well structured, such that it could withstand the changes I needed to make to it. Many CSS layouts are fragile, in that if you change just a little bit about it, the whole thing can start to fall apart. How to find the Dreamweaver CS3 templates Dreamweaver CS3 ships with many templates that you can access either by the ‘Welcome Screen’ or by going into: File > New. This will open up the ‘New Document’ window where you will be able to choose from four categories: • Blank Page • Blank Template • Page from Template • Page from Sample In ‘Blank Page’, I used a template called: ‘2 column liquid, left sidebar, header and footer’. Not the most exciting name, but it does tell you what you’re getting. If you are a Dreamweaver CS3 user, or someone just interested in exploring quality CSS templates, I would suggest taking a look at the Dreamweaver templates. PS: you can download a free if you don’t have it already. And if you are interested in learning Dreamweaver, you can view my free. Thanks, Stefan Mischook www.killersites.com www.killerphp.com. Dreamweaver is a great program for building and designing websites visually. But it can be daunting when you first open it. It has so many features—what are they all for? This eight-part tutorial series is designed to help you guide you through building a simple, yet elegant website in Dreamweaver CC 2015. It will guide you through the process of defining the site, building the structure with HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), adding text and images, and styling the pages with CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). To keep the tutorial series to a reasonable length, you’ll build only two web pages; but once you have done so, you should have sufficient knowledge to create more pages on your own. Let’s get started by downloading the sample files, and taking a look at the finished project. • Download the sample files from the link at the top of this page. • The files are compressed as a single ZIP file. Extract the files to a convenient location, such as your Desktop. • On Mac OS X, just clicking the downloaded ZIP file in the Mac Finder will automatically extract the files. • On Windows, right-click the downloaded ZIP file, and select Extract All from the context menu. Browse to a suitable location when prompted, and then click Extract. • Inside the extracted files is a folder called bayside. It should contain nine subfolders, as shown in Figure 1. The content folder contains the text content for the web pages, and the js folder contains a JavaScript file that will be used to control the navigation menu on small screen resolutions. The other folders contain a complete version of the project as it looks at the end of each part of this series. You can use these to check against your own code. There’s no folder for part 8 because the final part is dedicated to showing you how to upload the finished project to a web server.• Open the part7 folder, and drag index.html into a browser to view it. The home page of the finished project looks like Figure 2. • Click MENU again. The navigation menu slides up and out of view. • Open the navigation menu again, and click SIGHTS to view the second page (the other menu items are dummy links). So that's what you'll be building with Dreamweaver CC 2015 throughout this series. A common beginner mistake is to start working on web pages in Dreamweaver without defining a site. This results in links to assets, such as images and style sheets, pointing to a location on your local computer. Everything works fine until you come to upload the site to your remote server. Then you discover all your links are broken and need to be fixed. Avoid this heartache by always defining a site. It’s a quick and easy task. In Dreamweaver, a site organizes all the documents on your local computer associated with your website and lets you track and maintain links, manage files, and transfer your site files to a web server. A typical Dreamweaver site has at least two parts: • Local Folder: This is your working directory—usually a folder on your hard drive. Dreamweaver refers to this folder as your local site root. • Remote Folder: This is where you store your files on the computer that's running your web server. The web server is often (but not always) the computer that makes your site publicly available on the web. Tip: If you plan to work on several sites, it’s a good idea to create a folder on your local hard drive to store them. On Mac OS X, your home folder already includes a folder called Sites. On Windows, set up a folder called Sites at the top level of your C drive. Although the screenshots for this series were taken on Windows, the instructions are identical for Mac OS X, apart from keyboard shortcuts and the labels on some buttons (both are given). All you need to start working is to give your site a name, and tell Dreamweaver where you want to store the files on your local computer. You don't need to define the remote folder until you’re ready to upload your site to a live web server on the internet. • Start Dreamweaver and select Site > New Site. The Site Setup dialog box appears. • In the Site Name field, enter Bayside Responsive as the name of the site. The name is used internally by Dreamweaver to identify the site. When you create a web site in Dreamweaver, even if the site only has a few pages, using Dreamweaver’s web templates can make it easier to repeat (and update) key. Dreamweaver Templates. The Dreamweaver Templates Resource is a reviewed listing of high quality website template. Web Templates for Dreamweaver CS3. Estimating the time it takes to build a website ». When I was working on the redesign of the killersites.com, I found (as a starting point) that the templates that ship with Dreamweaver CS3 useful. Dreamweaver CS3 starter templates. Dreamweaver has a nice collection of bare-bones web templates. If you are looking for free Dreamweaver templates, then this article is for you. There are lots of professional high quality Dreamweaver (CSS/HTML) templates available in the market. It doesn't matter if it contains spaces. • Click the folder icon next to the Local Site Folder field to browse to and select the bayside folder from the sample files you downloaded. The Site Setup dialog box should now look like Figure 6, although the file path for Local Site Folder will depend on where you copied the bayside folder on your hard drive. A typical website contains a large number of files and folders. For ease of maintenance, it's important to organize them logically. Create separate, appropriately named folders for images, videos, style sheets, and external JavaScript files. Also bear the following points in mind: • File and folder names in websites should never contain spaces or any of the following characters: /?%*:|”. • Although other special characters are permitted, it's generally a good idea to confine yourself to alphanumeric characters, hyphens, and underscores. • Most file and folder names end up as part of a web page's URL, so keep them short, but meaningful. Long URLs are difficult for users to remember and type into browsers on a mobile device. • The vast majority of websites are hosted on Linux servers, which are case-sensitive. Using all lowercase letters for file and folder names avoids problems with files not being found. The images and color scheme for this project are stored online in a shared. CC Libraries make your visual assets available to you everywhere, and are particularly useful when collaborating with other people. For example, one person might be responsible for creating visual assets, while you're responsible for building the actual site. Check out the online documentation to learn more about using CC Libraries in Dreamweaver. You need to save the assets in the shared library to a library of your own. • Use the assets in the. • Click Save to Creative Cloud at the top-right of the browser screen, and save the shared assets to your Bayside library, if you have not already done so. • Select the Bayside library in the Dreamweaver CC Libraries panel. You should see four images and six color swatches as shown in Figure 9. You're going to create the Bayside Beat website from scratch. The sample files that you downloaded contain the text content in Microsoft Word and rich text format files, a JavaScript file, and copies of the project at each stage for you to compare against your own working files. Let's begin by creating two HTML pages for the site. • If the Dreamweaver Welcome Screen is visible, click HTML in the Create New section. Alternatively, select File > New from the main menu. In either case, this opens the New Document dialog box, as shown in Figure 10. • Make sure that New Document is selected in the column on the left, that Document Type is set to HTML, and Framework to None. • Type Bayside Beat: Cable Cars in the Title field. • Make sure that Doc Type is at the default HTML5, and that there is nothing listed in the Attach CSS field. If anything is listed in Attach CSS, select it, and click the trash can icon to the right of the field. • Click Create. Dreamweaver creates a blank HTML page in the Document window. • If necessary, select the Split button (see Figure 11) at the top left of Document window to reveal the underlying HTML markup. Line 1 is the document type ( doctype) declaration that tells the browser this is an HTML file. HTML is a tag-based language. Tags are surrounded by angle brackets. Most tags come in pairs, with the closing tag indicated by a forward slash after the opening angle bracket. The whole page is nested inside a pair of tags (on lines 2 and 10). The section on lines 2–6 contains information for the browser. All the content for the page goes between the opening and closing tags. Most of the time, Dreamweaver creates all the necessary code for you as you work with its visual interface and dialog boxes. But you need to be careful if you copy and paste code from elsewhere. Like human beings, an HTML page can have only one head and only one body. If content doesn’t show up in Live View or a browser, the most likely reason is that you’ve pasted it outside the body.• Save the file by selecting File > Save or using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+S (Windows) or Cmd+S (Mac). • In the Save As dialog box, make sure you are in the bayside local site folder, name the file index.html, and click Save. The file is now listed in the Files panel, and the tab at the top left of the Document window displays the filename. Tip: You can always get to the current website's local site folder by clicking the Site Root button at the bottom of the Save As dialog box.• Create a new HTML file. The Welcome Screen is no longer visible, so you need to use the menu option File > New to open the New Document dialog box. Alternatively, press Ctrl+N (Windows) or Cmd+N (Mac). • Select the same options as in step 2 previously, but this time leave the Title field blank, and then click Create. • Save the file in the site root folder as sights.html. • In Split View, the value between the tags on line 5 is 'Untitled Document'. This is what will be displayed in the browser tab or title bar. It will also be picked up by search engines. Leaving this value unchanged is a common beginner mistake. There are two ways to change it: • Go into the code, and change it manually, making sure you leave the opening and closing HTML tags intact. • Use Dreamweaver’s Property inspector. Let’s use that technique. • The Property inspector is the large horizontal panel at the bottom of the Document window in the Design workspace. If necessary, click the Properties tab to bring it to the front (initially, it’s hidden behind the Output panel). Replace Untitled Document in the Document Title field with Bayside Beat: Sightseeing. Notice that nothing changes in the underlying HTML while you’re typing.• To confirm the change, press the Tab key or Enter/Return. The value in the Document Title field replaces Untitled Document in the HTML code on line 5 (see Figure 13). • Save sights.html. Although Dreamweaver creates the HTML markup for you, it’s a good idea to keep Split View open much of the time when working with a web page. It lets you verify that the changes you made have been implemented correctly. That doesn’t mean that Dreamweaver is unreliable. Except in unusual circumstances, it will do exactly what you ask. But it’s important to know where you are in the document. If the insertion point is in the wrong place, your new code will be added there. If you’re not careful, you can end up with a tangled mess that can be difficult to unravel. The DOM panel, which we’ll be using in the next part of the tutorial series, is also invaluable in keeping track of the page structure. Tip: If you prefer to see the underlying code alongside the visual representation of the page, select View > Split Vertically. To revert to splitting the Document window horizontally, select the same option again. The View menu also lets you choose which side Live View should be on. Drag the bar separating Code and Live Views to adjust their relative sizes. Dreamweaver remembers your settings automatically.

You can also package the site and open it in another environment or application like Microsoft Visual Studio and further customize it there. When you save your site as a template, you create a Web Solution Package, or WSP. A WSP is a CAB file with the solution manifest. The solution you create gets stored in the Solution Gallery for the SharePoint site collection. From there, you can download a copy of the solution or activate it on the server. Note: The WSP you create is a partial trust user solution that has the same declarative format as a full trust SharePoint solution. The anatomy of a customer service email Customer service emails are support and sales exchanges that aim to resolve a specific problem. If you have any kind of email address posted on your website, no matter for which department, you will get customer service emails. The back and forth nature of emails will give you a bit of wiggle room in terms of the time of response. When it comes to email, the expected response time for a business falls somewhere between 4-24 hours. No matter how long it takes to reply to the email, you should always remember one thing: get personal. If there’s one golden rule for writing good customer service emails it would be adding the personal touch to each response. That’s the secret ingredient. The secret sauce. Any customer service situation, no matter how dire, can be defused with personalized service. You want to sound like a real person and not like a machine that has been programmed to give completely dry answers all day. Let’s go step by step through the things you can do to make your email reply more personal. Actually greeting the customer Far too many customer service emails read like telegraphs. It seems as if each character in an email was really costly and businesses wanted to save money on the greetings. Opening with a hearty hello and not going straight to business is the first step you can take to make your emails more personal. Greeting the customer sets the tone for the whole email so don’t mess it up. Addressing the customer by name Another piece of advice that may seem obvious but is often ignored by customer service agents. When talking to a customer, use their name. Don’t make the communication less personal by using strange titles like “customer” or, even worse, referring to a customer by a case number. It’s actually one of the easier ways to spot if you are dealing with an automated system or a real person. There’s nothing that screams “we are robots” like referring to a customer using just the case number. You might as well write the email in binary. This is usually a result of relying too much on automation or templates (which will be discussed later on in the post). I’m not saying that automation is bad in general. Just don’t overdo it in the first 2-4 words of your customer service email. Start with the first name, or Mr./Ms. And the surname if you are from a very formal industry. This will add another layer on which you will be able to build a relationship with a customer. Thanking the customer for contact Now, before moving to business, you should thank the customers for contact. You might thing that you’re the person that deserves thanks for answering the customer’s questions. However, it’s the other way around. You should thank customers for asking questions. After all they are doing you a favor. They are letting you know that something is either not working or that something is difficult to understand. Make sure to let them know that the they have to offer is really helpful to your company before moving on further. Summarize the situation You can summarize the current situation to make sure everyone’s on the same page. If you are having any doubts that you understand the customer’s situation, ask for confirmation. This is especially important when dealing with tough, complex cases. If it’s been a while since your last exchange with a customer, make sure to offer a brief summary of how things been going so far. This step will allow you to avoid any miscommunication further down the line. Rephrasing what the customer is saying is also a good way to check if you fully understand their concern. Extra useful when dealing with customers who use English as a 2nd language. Moving down to the answer After all the pleasantries and summing up the situation, it’s time to finally answer the customer’s question. Depending on the complexity of the problem, you have a range of tools at your disposal that will make the explanation easier to understand: • screenshots, • step-by-step lists, • examples, • links to materials from your. The aim here should be not only to provide an answer but also to do it in an easy to digest way. Make sure to respond directly to any doubts the customer expressed in their original message. If you don’t know something, it’s important that you don’t simply omit that. Take note and let the customer know that you will do your best to tie up any loose ends. If the problem is not resolved fully, set a timeframe when the customer can expect the reminder of the answer. Close with style After providing an answer, let the customer know that they should go directly to you if they have any doubts or questions. It’s not only convenient for the customer but also will save another agent the trouble of familiarizing themselves with the whole case. Adding a bit of personal touch at the end is like a cherry on top for customer service emails. Cracking a joke or simply wishing the customer a good day can change an unpleasant customer service case into a pleasant story customer’s share with their friends. Informal Once you get the basic structure of a customer service email, it’s time to move to finer details. You will contact tons of customers and they will all react a bit differently to what you have to say. Which style you should use when writing replies for customer service emails? Using the formal style is the safe option, but it often doesn’t sound personal or even real. Going informal is a bit of a risk and reward situation. You can gain by preparing personalized informal replies but you also risk angering some customers. To make your decision, you can look to a couple of factors. First off, you need to be aware of your audience. If you want to provide in a very formal industry, e.g. Medical experts, it’s hard to imagine that an informal reply would work well. The same goes the other way around. If you are running a paintball course, it’s hard to imagine that you would push for a formal approach. My advice is to go for the informal style, but do it with caution. At the first sign that you might be dealing with a customer that looks for a formal approach, make the appropriate changes. Look for the small cues, the way customers address you, how they form their sentences. If it looks formal, you can always mirror their approach and provide a formal reply. Using simple language Adding jargon and complex language to your customer service email replies is counterproductive. Using language like that will result in even more questions and doubts from the customer. Stick to simple language and provide an explanation that doesn’t require two degrees in the field just to get it. If you need to reference a more difficult term in your reply, try to explain it using customers’ words. If they came up with a particular term to explain their problem to you, use the same term when making your explanation. Automating customer service emails Is it possible to provide personal service in all customer service emails? But you can come close to it by making your automated emails feel personal. The more information you have about a customer, the easier it will be. You want to create emails so good and detailed that a customer is unsure it the notification email they just got came from an automated system or an actual person. Here’a good example from: I know for a fact that this is an automated email but they did a great job to make it feel more personal. Even though this is a notification for an upcoming webinar, the same rules apply to your customer service emails. Using the customer’s first name instead of their full name helps. After all, how often you are referred to by your full name in email communication (“Hello John Stockman, so nice to meet you!”). Making the subject line feel like an actual question helps too. It’s much better than using something that an automated system spewed out. Adding an agent’s name and photo at the end of the email is also a nice way of making it more personal. Even if the original email is not sent by the agent but by your email automation system, you can set the reply-to field for the email to the agent’s address. This way, they will be able to pick up the conversation when the customer responds. Customer service email templates The last piece of advice I want to give you is about email templates. A template can save you a ton of time if you are dealing with a lot of similar cases. However, there’s a catch. Templates are neat as long as they remain only templates. You have a problem when your templates are used as real answers. You can’t simply create one fit-all response and use it every time a customer asks about a particular topic. Your email templates should be more like guidelines for agents. Agents should inject a bit of the personal touch before sending the reply over. Have a rule where agents can’t simply send a template without making it more personal. An approach like this gives you the best of both worlds: personal touch at a scale. What’s you take on preparing customer service emails? Are you using templates in your email communication? How do you make it more personal? Make sure you share your methods in the comment section! I was just looking for ideas on creating my online CV and came across this. It does look very clean and professional. I don’t really know about microformats though? Can I ask what the benefits are of using these over just a standard design layout? I think as a designer a CV should be completely different to the standard CV layout you see in word etc. I would like to see more colours and some kind of design aspect about it, but obviously still making it printable and easily readable. But still a very nice idea for an upgrade to the standard word format.
